Risso’s Dolphin in Gran Canaria

The Risso’s dolphin in Gran Canaria, scientifically known as Grampus griseus, is one of the most fascinating cetacean species that can be observed during whale watching tours around the island. Its unique appearance and social behaviour make it a remarkable sight for nature lovers visiting Gran Canaria.

These animals are born with a dark grey or bluish colour. However, as they age, their bodies become covered with long white scars formed by interactions with other individuals and by the suction cups of the squid they feed on.

Physical characteristics of the Risso’s Dolphin in Gran Canaria

In the waters surrounding Gran Canaria, the adults reach between 3.2 and 4.3 metres in length and can weigh around 350 to 500 kg. There is no marked sexual dimorphism in size. They are also characterised by a robust, bulbous head without a distinct snout, with a distinctive vertical cleft in the forehead. Unlike other dolphins, these specimens only have teeth in the front of their lower jaw (usually 2 to 7 pairs), and occasionally some vestigial teeth in the upper jaw.

Newborn calves measure between 1.1 and 1.8 metres. They are generally shy and do not usually approach boats or their bows, although they may occasionally ‘peek’ vertically to observe their surroundings.

Intelligence and social behaviour

The Risso’s dolphin is a highly intelligent and sociable species, commonly found in the deep waters surrounding Gran Canaria. Although they are widely distributed and can be spotted on our trips, they are less common than the long-finned pilot whale.

This species usually travels in groups of between 5 and 30 individuals, although larger groups have occasionally been observed. It is worth noting that the social structure of these groups is complex and it is believed that they may form stable subgroups based on age or sex.
